Photos taken with an iPhone may contain location information (GPS) that indicates the location of the photo. Before posting to social media or sharing photos via email or cloud storage, it is safe to consider separately whether you want to remove location information from the original photo or only from the image you are sharing this time.

Method 1: Delete location information in Photos app

If you want to delete the location information attached to the photo itself, open the photo in your iPhone's Photos app.

1. Open the target photo or video in the Photos app

2. Open the item to Adjust location information from the details menu on the screen.

3. Select No location information

4. Close the photo and check if the location information display has disappeared.

This method is suitable when you want to organize the location information of the photos you have taken. If you want to leave a separate file for publication, please back up the original data before proceeding.

Method 2: Only share photos without location information

If you want to remove the location information from only the image you are currently sending while keeping the information about the original photo, use the option on the sharing screen.

1. Open the photo and press the share button

2. Open Options on the shared screen

3. Set not to share location information

4. Send, save and share

When it comes to travel photos and memorable photos, you may want to leave the location in the original data at hand, but remove GPS from only the copies you give to social media or work colleagues. In that case, this method is easier to handle.

Even if you turn off GPS, clues to the location in the photo remain

Even if you delete location information, the information in the image will not be deleted. In particular, please check separately for the following:

  • Signboard with readable address and store name
  • Telephone poles, station names, school names, distinctive buildings
  • Current location and nearest station on the map app
  • car license plate
  • Post text and location tags

It is safer to cover text information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and QR codes with opaque solid paint rather than mosaic or blurring.

Frequently asked questions

If I delete the location information on my iPhone, will the location information of the photo itself also be deleted?

Deleting location information from the Photos app is a way to remove location information associated with the target photo. If you want to preserve the location information of the original data, it is better to use a setting that does not include location information only when sharing.

Is it okay to post on SNS without deleting location information?

It is safer to check and delete location information yourself before sharing, rather than relying solely on the specifications of the posting destination. Even if you delete location information, the address and signboard in the photo will remain, so please check the contents of the image as well.
