Okutama Travel Guide
Choose safely among Okutama Station, Hikawa and Hatonosu gorges, Lake Okutama, and Nippara Limestone Cave using current buses and weather.
What Okutama is like
Okutama is not one walkable cluster: station-side gorges, Hatonosu, Lake Okutama, and Nippara are separated. Choose one theme—station walks, the lake, or Nippara—and build the day backward from bus times.
Heavy rain, rockfall, snow, and construction can close paths and roads. Mobile coverage varies, so save maps and service information in advance and plan to return before the final bus.
Stations and access
JR Okutama is the base, but Lake Okutama and Nippara Cave use different bus routes. Hatonosu Gorge is accessed from Hatonosu Station.
Major places to visit
Okutama Visitor Center
A station-side source for trail, nature, and weather information. Check current warnings and closures before entering the mountains.
Official information →Hikawa Gorge
A gorge area along the Tama and Nippara rivers walkable from the station. Stay away during high water or ice and obey closures.
Official information →Hatonosu Gorge
A gorge walk from Hatonosu Station with a suspension bridge and rocky scenery. Check path closures and take care on slippery steps.
Official information →Lake Okutama and Ogouchi Dam
A reservoir reached by bus from Okutama. Lakeside stops are far apart, so choose the exact stop and return service in advance.
Official information →Nippara Limestone Cave
A cave reached by the Nippara bus and a final walk. It is cool year-round with wet stairs, so carry a layer and wear grippy shoes.
