What Mt. Takao is like

Mt. Takao is an accessible day hike, but routes other than paved Trail 1 are genuine hiking trails requiring weather, daylight, and equipment judgment. Cable car or chairlift use still leaves walking to the summit, and the last service should anchor descent planning.

Autumn, fresh-green season, and holidays crowd the station, transport, and summit. Do not rush solely to reach the top; turn back at Yakuoin or mid-mountain if health or trail conditions deteriorate, and carry out food and waste.

Stations and access

Keio Takaosanguchi is the station for trailheads and Kiyotaki cable station. It is not JR Takao Station; verify the destination when transferring.

A practical route

  1. Morning: check weather and trail information at the museum or trailhead
  2. Late morning: reach Yakuoin by Trail 1 or cable transport according to ability
  3. Early afternoon: descend from the summit with ample daylight and before last transport

Before you go

  • Carry grippy footwear, water, and rain protection
  • Plan backward from sunset and last transport
  • Do not insist on the summit in poor weather or health

Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
