What Harajuku is like

Harajuku changes sharply between Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park west of the station and Takeshita Street and Omotesando to the east. A practical flow visits the shrine in the morning, then moves to the shopping side as businesses open.

Takeshita Street is short but slows dramatically on weekend afternoons. Balance shopping with ukiyo-e or the shrine, and reduce the number of stops if continuing into Omotesando.

Stations and access

JR Harajuku West Exit serves Meiji Jingu; Takeshita Exit faces Takeshita Street. Meiji-jingumae Station is convenient for the Omotesando side, with direction depending on exit number.

Major places to visit

Shrine and forest

Meiji Jingu

A forest approach leads from the great torii to the main sanctuary. Allow more than an hour for the walk and visit rather than treating it as an immediate station-side stop.

A practical route

  1. Morning: enter Meiji Jingu from JR Harajuku West Exit
  2. Midday: return to Takeshita Exit and walk the street in one direction
  3. Afternoon: visit Ota Memorial Museum and Harakado, then continue toward Omotesando

Before you go

  • Allow walking time to Meiji Jingu's main sanctuary
  • Keep the center of Takeshita Street clear
  • Use Harajuku's West and Takeshita exits deliberately

Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
