Sendai travel guide: sights and a practical walking route
Tohoku's largest city links arcades and Jozenji-dori on foot, with buses climbing to Zuihoden and the Sendai Castle site.
What Sendai is like
Covered shopping arcades extend west from Sendai Station, making meals and shopping manageable in poor weather. Historical sites are dispersed on hills and residential corridors, so use the sightseeing loop bus or regular buses.
Rather than attempting every Date clan site, anchor the day with Zuihoden and the castle site, then add either the city museum or Osaki Hachimangu.
Stations and access
A sightseeing loop bus connects Sendai Station with Zuihoden, the museum area, and the castle site. The Tozai subway also reaches Aobayama, but check uphill walking from each stop.
Major places to visit
Zuihoden
The mausoleum of Date Masamune, set among cedars with ornate architecture. Do not underestimate its stone steps.
Official information →Sendai Castle Site
A hilltop former castle compound overlooking the city. Visit it as an archaeological and interpretive site, not a reconstructed keep.
Official information →Sendai City Museum
Houses material on the Sendai domain and regional history. Check exhibition changes and closing days.
Official information →Osaki Hachimangu
A shrine known for Momoyama-period architecture, reached by bus and a final stairway climb.
Official information →Jozenji-dori Avenue
A central avenue lined with zelkova trees and cultural venues. Check event-period road closures and crowds.
Official information →A practical route
- Morning: bus from Sendai Station to Zuihoden, then continue to the castle site
- Afternoon: visit the city museum and return downtown by subway or bus
- Evening: walk Jozenji-dori and the arcades before dining near the station
Before you go
- Allow for sightseeing-bus delays caused by traffic
- Wear suitable shoes for slopes and steps at the castle site and Zuihoden
- Keep alternative restaurants rather than relying on one famous queue
Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
