What Sendai is like

Covered shopping arcades extend west from Sendai Station, making meals and shopping manageable in poor weather. Historical sites are dispersed on hills and residential corridors, so use the sightseeing loop bus or regular buses.

Rather than attempting every Date clan site, anchor the day with Zuihoden and the castle site, then add either the city museum or Osaki Hachimangu.

Stations and access

A sightseeing loop bus connects Sendai Station with Zuihoden, the museum area, and the castle site. The Tozai subway also reaches Aobayama, but check uphill walking from each stop.

  • Date clan history
  • Urban base for Tohoku food
  • A center manageable in rain

Major places to visit

Mausoleum

Zuihoden

The mausoleum of Date Masamune, set among cedars with ornate architecture. Do not underestimate its stone steps.

A practical route

  1. Morning: bus from Sendai Station to Zuihoden, then continue to the castle site
  2. Afternoon: visit the city museum and return downtown by subway or bus
  3. Evening: walk Jozenji-dori and the arcades before dining near the station

Before you go

  • Allow for sightseeing-bus delays caused by traffic
  • Wear suitable shoes for slopes and steps at the castle site and Zuihoden
  • Keep alternative restaurants rather than relying on one famous queue

Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
