What Otaru is like

The standard route descends from Otaru Station to the canal and continues to Sakaimachi Street. Finishing at Minami-Otaru Station avoids retracing the entire route.

The winter canal is atmospheric, but hills and compacted snow slow the walk. Mt. Tengu needs a separate bus allowance beyond the central walking circuit.

Stations and access

The canal is roughly a ten-minute downhill walk from Otaru Station. Continue south through Sakaimachi and return from Minami-Otaru for an efficient one-way route.

  • Day trip from Sapporo
  • Port history and warehouses
  • Glass, sweets, and crafts

A practical route

  1. Morning: descend from Otaru Station and walk the canal warehouses
  2. Midday: combine lunch with selected stops on Sakaimachi Street
  3. Afternoon: choose either the museum or Mt. Tengu, then return from Minami-Otaru or Otaru

Before you go

  • Allow extra walking time on winter hills and ice
  • Choose a return train to Sapporo before planning dinner
  • If adding Mt. Tengu, do not try to visit every central shop

Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
