What Hakodate is like

Hakodate Station, the morning market, and bay area connect on foot, while Motomachi climbs uphill. Goryokaku lies in the opposite direction, so split the day using the streetcar.

The Mt. Hakodate view is highly weather- and crowd-dependent. Treat it as one part of the day rather than the sole reason to visit, and leave enough time for the historic districts.

Stations and access

Use Hakodate Station as the base and the streetcar for Goryokaku-koen-mae and Jujigai. Motomachi is hilly, so limit unnecessary walking before an evening viewpoint visit.

  • Historic port atmosphere
  • Morning market and seafood
  • Streetcar travel and night views

A practical route

  1. Morning: eat at the market, then take the streetcar to Goryokaku
  2. Afternoon: walk Motomachi downhill toward the bay area
  3. Evening: check weather and crowds before heading to Mt. Hakodate

Before you go

  • Check same-day Mt. Hakodate transport because wind and maintenance can change access
  • Schedule the market around actual morning hours
  • Store luggage near the station before Motomachi's hills, especially in winter

Opening hours, prices, tickets, and temporary closures can change. Check each official website before visiting.
